Wonthaggi doughnut van fundraiser
The Wonthaggi doughnut van was set up by Wonthaggi Fire brigade to raise money for the brigade by selling doughnuts to the local community.
The idea came from a local brigade member, also the town baker, who suggested it would make a good fundraiser for the group. From there the brigade started with a portable marquee and used that for a number of years until it was decided they needed a more permanent transportable doughnut trailer. A trailer was eventually sourced from a community group and since then the brigade has never looked back.
Every month, brigade members set up at the Wonthaggi Rotary Market selling doughnuts for a $1 each, with the brigade making a profit of around $700 from each market. The trailer also attends other events such as Day at the Cape, Bunning’s activities and brigade open days. Last weekend, the brigade also supported Camp Quality by donating doughnuts free of charge to children at the camp.
Kathryn Sloan, Brigade Fundraising Coordinator said “We love to make the cinnamon and sugar doughnuts and for a minimal outlay we get a good return, which helps to support our activities and buy additional equipment. The trailer is well supported by the local community and everyone enjoys our doughnuts. Since we started five years ago we have raised around $20,000 from the venture, with sales still going strong.”
So if you are in the area, why not drop into the Wonthaggi Rotary Market to experience the brigade’s doughnuts. The market is the second Sunday of every month at Apex Park, Murray St, Wonthaggi.
