On Friday 15 May at a gala dinner in Horsham, Halls Gap, Pomonal and Stawell brigades were announced winners in their category of the 2015 Northern Grampians Shire Volunteer Awards. More than 300 people from across Western Victoria attended the dinner.

District 17 HQ brigade's weather monitors

A Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) initiative 10 years ago to gather more accurate weather readings close to going fires has led to the strategic long-term placement of five portable automatic weather stations (PAWS) with fire brigades in Horsham, Wangaratta North and Hazelwood North, and two with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) at Altona.

More than a century later and still going strong

Fire brigades have been holding local and district competitions for more than 140 years. The Rural Championships have been held continuously since the early 1950s. This year is no different with approximately 200 brigades competing in the Urban and Rural State Championships.
