While the vast majority of our 400,000 app users are using the app successfully we are still getting some reports of issues from a small number of users.

FIRE DANGER RATING FORECAST: To access FDR forecasts on your app tap on the area that displays your current Fire Danger Rating (just below battery level indicator and time)

SUGGESTED FIXES:

[Please remember that issues with the performance of the app may be related to your internet connection or device settings beyond our control - you should ensure all settings on your device are set correctly and your internet connection is working before trying the following tips]

ANDROID: The Android version of the app is only compatible with phones (not tablet devices) with a minimum screen resolution of 480 x 800 running Android 2.2 and above. Ensure you have updated to the most recent version of the app (3.0.5) http://bit.ly/VrfPib

iPHONE 4: (1) Delete (2) Reinstall (3) Open (4) Tap "Don't Allow" when asked about Location Services. App should now open. To switch Location Services on go to phone settings (Settings - Privacy - Location Services - FireReady). Return to app, tap on cog wheel in top left and switch Location Services on.

OTHER iPHONES / iPADS: Delete and reinstall.

Other users have reported that fully powering off their device and restarting it has solved general device issues that were also affecting the performance of the app.

If your app still doesn't work please report to firereadyapp@cfa.vic.gov.au

WINDOWS / BLACKBERRY: No known fix.

DATA USAGE: To avoid any excessive data use on your mobile you may choose to switch off the FireReady App when you have finished using it. As with many apps that access the internet, leaving them on or open on your device can use up your data allowance. Another way to reduce data usage is to turn off push notifications and location services but this limits the functionality of many features on the app.

BATTERY LIFE: Again, as with many apps that use locations services, push notifications, and regularly update information, your battery life may be shorter than usual. Recharge your phone whenever possible and have a car charger / battery backup / solar charger available in case of power outage.

APPLE MAPS:

iPhone and iPad users who have upgraded to Apple's most recent operating system (iOS6) are forced by Apple to use Apple maps. Those users may have noticed that  a number of Victorian towns are located incorrectly. Users report that towns are located on their maps at the centre of the district rather than on the actual township itself.

CFA has contacted Apple Australia a number of times but they have not provided a solution. Apple advises users to report inaccuracies via their Apple Maps app.

This is not just a problem for the FireReady app, it relates to anyone using Apple Maps and has been recognised by Apple worldwide.

We would advise FireReady app users with iOS6 installed on their devices to disregard Apple Maps township locations and instead focus on street names and the location of incidents & warnings in relation to their GPS location.

It’s important not to rely on one source of information. You can follow @CFA_Updates on twitter for warnings information, the CFA Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cfavic for warnings, keep across incident information on the CFA website (www.cfa.vic.gov.au) and via local radio. There is also the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Thanks for your patience.
