Fire services advise that recent fire activity in the Gippsland region has generated large amounts of smoke which may be visible across most of Melbourne.

The Aberfeldy fire, which started on Thursday, has burnt more than 56,000 hectares.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant in their preparedness, but should check their surroundings and ensure there is actually a fire, before reporting it to 000,” CFA Agency Commander in the State Control Centre, Joe Buffone said.

“The public are also reminded to reduce speed on roads and drive to the conditions in smoke-affected areas.”

The weather bureau advise that the smoke being smelt around the state today would have been generated on Thursday and Friday last week.

If you are experiencing any symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure, the Department of Health advises people to seek medical advice or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.
