Today marks the start of National Volunteer Week 2021.
With more than 50,000 volunteers operating in over 1200 brigades, CFA is one of the largest volunteer emergency services in the world that responds to more than 33,000 incidents annually.
This week CFA takes the opportunity to thank all volunteer members for their selflessness and dedication in protecting the Victorian community and beyond.
To celebrate National Volunteer Week we will be sharing a number of stories on our CFA channels to showcase the diverse, unique and inspirational contributions you all make.
Hillcrest Firefighter Rochelle Poulton, who was recently elected as 5th lieutenant, spoke about her experience in CFA.
“Being in CFA has taught me nothing but great qualities that I have been able to bring into my normal day-to-day life which I am forever greatful for,” Rochelle said.
“From a young age I have been brought up to be independent and fearless and it’s because of this I joined CFA.
“Since I joined over five years ago as a junior I haven’t regretted a single day. My fellow brigade members are like my own family.
“One of the main qualities I have learned is how to be a great leader and that even though at times it can be tough it’s never impossible,” she added. “On 1 May I became my brigades 5th lieutenant and I couldn’t be more stoked about it.”

Laceby West Fire Brigade Secretary, Treasurer and Communications Officer Jono Leahy joined the brigade two years ago after seeing firsthand what CFA volunteers do.
“I joined CFA after we had a fire at our property here in Laceby,” Jono said. “I wanted to make a difference and help out after CFA did a fantastic job containing the fire.
“I’ve found it really rewarding being a member of CFA and I’m really proud of my contribution.
“It’s really opened my eyes to fire prevention and preparedness and I’ve made some great friends in the brigade.
“I’ve got an IT background so it’s been great to be able to bring some of my own skills into my roles as secretary and treasurer in the brigade.”
CFA CEO Natalie MacDonald and Chief Officer Jason Heffernan recognised all volunteers for their contribution.
“This week we say thank you to each and every CFA volunteer for their selflessness and dedication to protecting the Victorian community and beyond.
"Members and their families make an incredible contribution each and every day. We are extremely proud to lead our great organisation and look forward to working alongside you all into the future."
