In glorious weather, over 60 people admired the new tanker and station, and came to talk about planning for the forthcoming fire season at Acheron Rural Fire Brigade’s open day on Sunday 20 September. Story by Andy Lloyd.

Alan Harding, Acheron Brigade Captain, told the crowd that the main threat at Acheron comes from lightning strikeswith three major fires caused by lightning last season.

He explained that the forecast for this summer is for hot and dry conditions, with unusually warm nights.  This means fires this summer are expected to burn hotter and longer, with less relief in the evenings than usual.

A highlight of the day was the smoke tent to demonstrate the importance of crawling low in a smoke filled environment.  A comprehensive display of fire extinguishers included a powder extinguisher which sits in the roof cavity and can be effective in stopping roof fires.

The brigade raised nearly $1500 on the day towards their target of $6000 to purchase a defibrillator and a generator, and is keen to hear from local residents to update their fire plans. More information is available at the station, or by contacting brigade secretary Andy Lloyd.
