UPDATE 4/6: The hazardous ammonia leak at Fonterra in Cobden is safe. An All-Clear Advice message was issued for the incident yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 3 June) at 5.55pm.

Around 2000 litres of Ammonia has leaked at Fonterra’s Cobden factory in southwest Victoria and Ambulance Victoria has attended to more than 10 affected workers – none have required hospital treatment.

While there is no threat to the local community and no readings of ammonia outside the factory’s perimeter, an advice message was issued at 4:37pm (Tues 3 June) advising people to avoid the area. This message is likely to remain in place until the morning (Wed 4).

The Coria Hazmat Detection Unit, Cobden tanker and Cobden Support vehicle are on scene working to determine the source of the leak, most likely from a pressure relief valve, as well as ventilating the building.

Around 40 workers have been evacuated and CFA crews are likely to remain on scene for several more hours.
