CFA crews are preparing for a long night as they manage a hazmat incident in Chelsea Heights that resulted in the closure of two major roads.

As many as 10 vehicles from Patterson River, Edithvale, Dandenong  and Hallam were on hand after ammonia leaked from a 700-litre pressurised supply at the Lion Dairy in Wells Rd late on Tuesday 28 February.

Operations Officer Paul Carrigg said the hazmat was a long drawn out process and firefighters had to be particularly cautious given that ammonia can be explosive.

“Fortunately air monitoring detected none of the material whatsoever in nearby residential areas,” Paul said.

Wells and Thompson roads were closed.

Two dairy employees were taken to hospital for observation.
