Bayswater's Steel Bumper Sunday
Sunday the 21st of April saw the first running of the Steel Bumper Sunday Car Show, an event held to assemble a display of classic, historic and modified vehicles that were originally fitted with steel bumpers, Bayswater CFA was the grateful recipient of all proceeds from the day.
The event was held under a perfect blue sky at the Manhattan Hotel in Ringwood. There were more than 300 cars of all vintages helping to draw a massive crowd.
Bayswater Fire Brigade were on hand to feed the masses with a BBQ. The brigade was kept on its feet with a high demand for sausages in bread and cold drinks from the show-goers. Victoria Police were on hand to help out, even doing supply trips to the local shops as needed.
Lieutenant Michael Roche from Bayswater Fire Brigade said "The Brigade decided that being involved with the Steel Bumper Car display would be fantastic way to interact with the community, particularly with a segment of the community that we would not normally have the opportunity to interact with. The response exceeded our expectations. The funds raised will be put to use in purchasing equipment and boosting training that will help us in our task of protecting the community. Although the event was held in the City of Maroondah, Bayswater as a support Brigade responds into Maroondah to assist the MFB, so we thank the MFB for allowing us to participate in this event in their area and we thank the people of Maroondah for their support.”
As the day went on, more and more people came to admire the vehicles on display. There were various competitions held for entrants to be judged by the public, however a standout for the little kids and big kids alike was Bayswater Tanker.
“It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter how nice your car is, it’s always hard to compete against a big red fire truck!”
On Sunday 2nd of June, Bayswater Fire Brigade received a visit from some of the show cars from the event, who brought with them a cheque for $2000. Once again, many cameras were out taking advantage of the weather and the well-presented vehicles.
Simon Kingswell, who helped organise the event said “I would like to acknowledge the following businesses that contributed give aways for the day - Penrite Oil, Autobarn Bayswater, Burson Automotive Bayswater, Rare Spares, Loaded Dice Photography, Just Cars & Just Parts Magazine Group and Air Ride Suspension Supplies. Without the assistance of the above businesses we would not have been in a position to forward every cent that was donated on the day to the CFA. It makes us very proud as a group to give back to the community in this way. “
Bayswater Fire Brigade would like to thank everyone involved with Steel Bumper Sunday. A special thanks goes to the following major sponsors of the event - Shannons Insurance, IGB Insurance, Hi-Gloss Bodyworks, Canterbury Tyre & Mag Supamart, Rare Spares, Your Brand Unleashed, The Manhattan Hotel & Loaded Dice Photography and of course, Simon and the rest of the Steel Bumper team.
