In October last year, CFA sent a survey to all brigades requesting the number of Pacific BR5 Bushfire helmets that do not have a Pacific torch mounting bracket. To date 80% of brigades have responded.

In February this year the first 150 fitting kits were dispatched to brigades within the Barwon South West Region. Each fitting kit contains the required number of helmet brackets, a fitting mask, drill bits, appropriate PPE, a socket driver and instructions to ensure correct bracket installation. Once a brigade has fitted their helmets, the fitting mask and socket driver must be returned in the supplied pre-paid express post pack.  Additional brigade fitting kits will be progressively dispatched as the original 150 are returned.

For brigades that selected “fit by others” a torch bracket fitter commenced a demanding schedule early February. This program involves attending 104 brigades and fitting over 2,000 helmets. The “fit by others” schedule is expected to conclude during May this year.

Torches and storage cases will be dispatched only when the brigades’ helmets have been fitted and fitting kit components returned. Torches are not individually issued. They are allocated to all bushfire firefighting vehicles on a “one per seat” basis and will be stored in the protective case along with replacement batteries.

Survey results have so far ascertained a requirement to fit over 23,000 helmets and issue approximately 10,000 torches state-wide.  The project is expected to be finalised by 30 June 2013.
