Buxton brigade celebrated its 70th anniversary at Buxton Hotel on Saturday 8 March by packing out the hotel.

Member and MC for the evening, Phil Ladson, said, “Members were very interested in the presentation reviewing the 70 years since the brigade’s official start. They only made it official in 1944 so they could join the CFA when it was created.”

As well as 350 years of long service awards to various members, brigade life memberships were awarded to Wayne Fiske, John Larner (posthumous), Stan Larner and Max Leslie, each for decades of significant service to the brigade.

Captain Mark Somers then presented a surprise 'In Appreciation' award to Nancy Leslie for her 50 years of support to local emergency services. Public recognition for Nancy's achievement has been overlooked for much too long. Mark presented another “In Appreciation” award to Buxton Hotel, represented by Linda Ellis, for the hotel’s (and its patrons') long-term support to the brigade.

Phil Ladson said, “We then unveiled the new honour boards, which acknowledge the people who have stepped up since 1944. Graham Eddy explained the honour board for officers and those for individual awards such as CFA Life Membership.”

As the very successful evening was drawing to a close, Jillian Chandler surprised Captain Mark Somers with a token of appreciation on behalf of the local community and the brigade, saying, “Mark has generously extended his special training abilities, experience and leadership not only to the brigade but to the community as a whole." Mark has been appointed regional commander of VICSES for Gippsland, so is standing down as captain but plans to remain active with the brigade.
