CFA & Hawthorn FC join forces
District 13's Upper Ferntree Gully brigade and Parks Victoria have formed a partnership with Hawthorn Football Club to help push the summer fire safety message in high-risk fire areas.
Volunteer Fire-fighters from Upper Ferntree Gully and Parks Victoria Ranger Damien Van Heeswyk recently met with Coach Alastair Clarkson and a number of Hawthorn footy players at the base of the 1000 steps to discuss the importance of bushfire safety.
The Hawks have a long history with the Dandenong Ranges National Park and the Kokoda Track memorial Walk. In a statement issued by Hawthorn Football Club CEO Stuart Fox “The Club is proud to support the CFA’s Summer Safety Campaign and we urge the public to think twice before visiting high risk areas on Severe, Extreme or Code Red fire danger days this summer, ”
“With the Dandenong Ranges in our backyard we are often utilising the great walking tracks during pre-season training, however our fitness staff always monitor the conditions and weather warnings very closely before sending players there.”
“Summer is now upon us so it’s important to check weather warnings and conditions before travelling to these areas, don’t risk it” Fox Said.
On Code Red days most National Parks are closed, it is an offence to enter these areas and you may be issued with a fine. For more information on park closures go to www.parks.vic.gov.au.
If a fire breaks out you will have very little time to act and your life will be at risk, have a plan of what to do and where to go in the event of a fire. People who are planning to visit high fire danger areas when the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red Days, need to consider changing their plans or at least monitor the FireReady app, CFA website or contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line 1800 240 667.
It is not a matter of if it will happen; it’s a matter of when.
