2016 Smoke Alarm Campaign
In 2015 there were over 3,000 home fires in Victoria alone. Smoke alarms are designed to provide an early warning and time to evacuate safely – but they can only do this if they work.
The national Smoke Alarm Campaign is held each year leading up to the end of daylight savings. This year, CFA and MFB are no longer partnering with Duracell on the campaign, which provides the opportunity to do things a little differently.
The key campaign message ‘only working smoke alarms save lives’ will be retained but will also shift this year to promote greater awareness of the dangers of faulty smoke alarms that have passed their 10-year life span as well as targeting those who may not understand their home fire safety responsibilities. Social media will be a key channel used this year to promote the campaign with five short videos that have been created.
As part of the 2016 campaign, CFA is partnering with Bunnings to set up educational information displays on Saturday 2 April 2016 (end of daylight savings is Sunday 3 April 2016) at the following Bunnings stores –
Bunnings Store | District | CFA Brigade/Group attending |
Bendigo (Kangaroo Flat) | 02 | North West Region Community Education Group |
Caroline Springs | 14 | Caroline Springs Fire Brigade |
Echuca | 20 | Bamawm Extension Brigade |
Epsom | 02 | Huntly Fire Brigade |
Hoppers Crossing | 14 | Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade |
Melton | 14 | Melton and Eynesbury Fire Brigades |
Mildura | 18 | Irymple Fire Brigade |
Swan Hill | 18 | Swan Hill Brigade |
Werribee | 14 | Werribee Fire Brigade |
This is a great opportunity to get smoke alarm safety messages out there, and continue the tradition of encouraging Victorians to test or replace their smoke alarms and batteries around this time of year.
