CFA and Telstra improve community safety

CFA and Telstra have joined forces to inform Victorians on how to better prepare themselves and their families for the summer fire season.

CFA and Telstra each have a long history of supporting at-risk communities and helping them prepare for summer, in addition to working together on recovery efforts.

This new partnership, which includes joint events and social media campaigns, will focus on providing the community with practical tips for bushfire preparedness. Victorians can attend CFA community events or participating Telstra stores to find out how technology can help keep them informed and connected during an incident.

CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said fires can start and spread quickly, so it is essential the community is well prepared and well informed.

“Last summer there were over 2,000 warnings issued in Victoria. It’s up to you to stay informed by using more than one source of information, understanding warnings, what they mean, what you should do and building this into your fire plan,” Mr Warrington said.

“CFA works hard to foster local relationships and engage communities. This partnership allows CFA to leverage off Telstra’s public information channels which will improve access to community safety messages.

“In preparation for what is shaping up to be a challenging summer season, it is essential the community has easy access to relevant safety information which will help themselves and their families  stay informed and ultimately safe.

Telstra’s Victoria and Tasmania Director Andy Hitchen said while we all love to get out and about and enjoy the summer weather, it was important to be vigilant and well-prepared.

“Communication is the key to staying safe during high risk days. Make sure you plan ahead, stay informed and be connected with loved ones during an emergency,” said Mr Hitchen. “Even if you don’t live in a fire prone area, you may work in or travel through a high-risk area, so it’s important that everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

“We are pleased to be working with CFA to ensure that all Victorians are aware of what they can do now to be prepared for a summer emergency.”
