CFA held the annual CALD Communities Spokespersons Training Day at Pakenham Fire Station on Thursday 15th of November.

Twenty CFA CALD Spokespersons attended the training day who are professional interpreters in the following languages:

  • Afghan (Dari)
  • Arabic
  • Burmese
  • Cantonese
  • Croatian
  • Greek
  • Hindi
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Khmer
  • Korean
  • Macedonian
  • Maltese
  • Mandarin
  • Persian
  • Serbian
  • Somali
  • Spanish
  • Sudanese
  • Turkish
  • Vietnamese

The training consisted of updating the CALD Spokespersons on the season ahead with a presentation by Peter Baker on the seasonal outlook.  They took part in a discussion lead by Con Patralis about warnings and the best ways to disseminate warnings to CALD communities.

Then the focus shifted to Can I or Can’t I and understanding what is legally restricted during the Fire Danger Period and on Total Fire Ban days.  Time was spent running through the key messages for the season and the actions we want people to take who live in high risk areas.

It was an interactive and engaging day with the CALD Spokespeople feeling confident at the end that they could go out into their communities and help spread the word about bushfire safety and survival.
