CFA gets gig in the Gong
Twelve CFA members were flying the CFA flag as both delegates and presenters at the NSW-Rural Fire Service (RFS) led ‘Australian Community Engagement and Fire Awareness Conference’ in Wollongong last weekend.
Two CFA volunteers were involved in presentations at the event. South Warrandyte Fire Brigade Captain Greg Kennedy presented alongside Jodi Clark of Be Ready Warrandyte on their fantastic local community education program. Their presentation included the comical Warrandyte video ‘Do you have a fire plan? The session was very well received by the huge audience of 430 NSW-RFS members and their guests. You can view Greg and Jodi’s presentation here.
April Himmelreich of The Basin Fire Brigade also enthusiastically presented on ‘Using the arts to get your message across’ which included a demonstration of her ‘Captain Koala and Friends Show’. You can view April’s presentation here.
The two-day conference aims to build effective local community engagement and awareness activities both before fires through prevention and mitigation, and in the reaction, response and recovery phases.
Jo Crockett, a volunteer at Bannockburn Fire Brigade attended and was delighted to share the experience with so many equally passionate people. “I learnt so many different ways of thinking about the community we serve” Jo said. “One thing that stood out for me is to think about what will make a particular community member want to take action on their fire safety. For one person it might be for the sake of their kids or their family, for another it might be for their pets, animals or their business. The CFA presentations were right up there with the best for the whole event too”
