A CFA member is preparing to put on his firefighting gear and get hot and sweaty, despite being nowhere near a fire.
On Sunday 23 October, Ocean Grove Fire Brigade’s Adam Thompson will climb all 1,504 stairs of the Sydney Tower Eye in an effort to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research.
The event, now in its second year, attracts hundreds of firefighters from across the globe.
Mr Thompson said although it will be a gruelling challenge, it is nothing in comparison to the challenge patients with MND face every day.
“I can’t even come close to imagining how difficult it would be to lose your mobility and fitness,” said Mr Thompson.
“As a firefighter, your physical ability is so important to your job. I have so much admiration for people who have the mental strength to tackle a disease like MND every day of their lives.”
Firefighters Climb for MND is hoping to blitz last year’s $180,000 fundraising efforts with a whopping $500,000 target.
“I believe that charity events such as these speak in volumes and whilst my part may only be small, together we have the potential to make a big difference,” said Mr Thompson.
“I'm doing the climb on behalf of myself, my community and CFA to show my support for this very worthy cause.”
Much is still not known about the biology of the disease and more research is needed to find a cure – and that takes money.
Every cent raised by the Firefighters Climb for MND will go directly to funding MND research.
