CFA swears White Ribbon oath
Thirty per cent of women worldwide are affected by intimate partner violence, the most common type of violence against women.
And Australia is not immune. At least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner.
CFA Chief Officer and White Ribbon Ambassador Euan Ferguson said this behaviour is unacceptable and inexcusable, and stopping this violence is everyone’s responsibility.
In light of this and to mark White Ribbon Day, CFA members gathered at Headquarters in Burwood East today (25 November) to collectively swear the oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. The event also raised money for White Ribbon and awareness around the cause.
Watch the ‘swearing of the oath’ on YouTube.
Recently, members from the Eastern Metropolitan Region also got involved by joining Victoria Police and other community groups and organisations in a flash mob dance and swearing of the oath at Eastland shopping centre in Ringwood. A video from the event is also is also available on YouTube.
Mr Ferguson is encouraging other regions and brigades to follow the lead by either hosting an event or by swearing the oath. He suggested swearing the oath at the next staff or brigade meeting or online at www.whiteribbon.org.au/standup
“Get behind this campaign, and spread the word - join the more than 80,400 Australians who have already shown their support,” Mr Ferguson said.
CFA would like to thank Great Temptations - a supplier to Ritchies IGA supermarkets - who kindly donated more than 200 cupcakes and muffins for the event.
