May 13-19 2013 is National Volunteer Week and we would like to take a moment to say "Thanks a Million" for the hard work of our 624 volunteers from across Victoria.

The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard has 19 volunteer Coast Guard bases across the state from Portland to Mallacoota including Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, Lake Hume and Lake Eppalock.

A volunteer crew is on standby to assist people and vessels in distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Composed entirely of volunteers, the organisation was formed in 1961 with the aim of promoting safety in the operation of small craft. It assists boaters by way of education, example, examination and search and rescue.

Volunteer achievements over the last year:

- New SafeTrx smartphone App, which takes the "search" out of "search and rescue", was rolled out in February and is monitored by volunteers 24 hours a day in Victoria.  Directly from a smartphone users can enter their journey details and set off knowing that should they not return by the time given, our response team will be alerted and initiate appropriate action.  Stats for Victoria from 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2012:
- 624 volunteer members across Victoria
- 566 assists (this includes rescues and breakdowns)
- 1193 people rescued
- 70,428 volunteer hours by members
– Approximately $44 million worth of vessels assisted

 Two of our volunteer stars:

Bob Shillito is not only a Wellbeing/Peer support member whose region extends down to Warrnambool and Portland, but he has been the Deputy Flotilla Commander of Werribee for over 3 years, has recently had to step up to the role of Acting Flotilla Commander, is a husband, father, stepfather and grandfather, is always there for members to lean on and, on top of all that, holds down a FULL TIME JOB as the engineering supervisor at the Hotel Windsor (and gets called in at all hours of day and night). Bob also manages time to grow his own extensive veggie patch and raise beautiful, award-winning orchids

Matt Semmens is the Flotilla Commander at Carrum.  Working full time as a boat salesman, Matt also manages one of the busiest flotillas in Victoria with 53 members and approximately 100 assists during 2012.  Matt’s efforts were recognised at the last awards night where he was awarded Flotilla Commander of the year.
