In August 1909 the first Cobram Fire Station opened its doors, and now more than 100 years later their brigade has been given a new home.
Formal celebrations kicked off on Friday 21 October when the Cobram Fire Brigade marched into their new station on Colgan Street.
Neighbouring brigades and emergency services were invited to join in the tradition which symbolises the fire brigade once again resuming vigil over Cobram and surrounding communities, ever watchful against the threat of fire and other emergencies.
The following day (22 October) approximately 130 people turned out to take a sneak peak at the new and improved station before the official proceedings began at 2pm.
The station was officially opened by the Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino.
The $1.5 million state-of-the-art facility was fully funded by CFA Capital Works Program and will further improve the brigade’s ability to respond to their 150+ incidents per year.
The new station boasts a 3 Bay Motor Room, BA Cleaning Room, PPC Drying Room, Brigade & CFA Administration Offices and much more.
Cobram brigade Captain Adrian Hilder has strong family ties to the brigade, being the third generation of captains in his family. His father Michael and Grandfather John both served in this role at the Cobram Fire Brigade.
Captain Hilder said today (22 October) marks another significant chapter in Cobram’s rich history.
“The Cobram Fire Brigade has always been an important part of our community and we are so excited to have a facility that our members can settle in to and call their new home.
“Community safety will always be our number one priority and we now have the new and improved resources to ensure we can respond to all incidents as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“Our new station will not only benefit Cobram, but will improve our capabilities to assist our neighbouring Victorian and interstate communities.
After the official proceedings, guests were treated to a tour of the station, followed by a delicious afternoon tea.
