Community Fireguard Birthday
Kalorama Memorial Reserve in Mt Dandenong was abuzz with community fireguard members and their families from across the state, brigade members, council reps and fire and emergency officials to celebrate Community Fireguard’s 20th Birthday.
The celebration event was a chance for CFG (Community Fireguard Group) members across the state to network and share their CFG stories and experiences as well as meet the faces behind the program. Many program members, some who have been involved over the last 20 years took the opportunity as a day to celebrate their own personal program achievements.
Angela Cook, Program coordinator and organiser of the event said “ I have personally gained an appreciation for how much the community can do and how bushfire preparedness can be enhanced through the local connections and networks formed in a Community Fireguard group”.
Attending the event were a host of key community safety figures including ex CFA member Alan Rhodes, Eastern Metropolitan Region Manager of Community Safety, Ray Fritz, and D13 Regional Director David Baker all of whom made speeches and help cut the cake!
The day also paid special recognition to several community fireguard groups during the presentation of the ‘Carson Awards’. These awards are in memory of Chris Carson who had been heavily involved in the creation, management and facilitation of the CFG program before his passing in 2006 from Leukemia.
The awards went to outstanding efforts of Community Fireguard groups that were actively involved in the program and committed to continuing to learn, to share and engage with their group members and their community.
