Creswick grass fire contained

CFA and DSE have contained a medium grass fire that broke out at Creswick yesterday.

The fire was called in at 3.15pm and quickly spread through grassland and a pine plantation.

At the height of the fire, almost 300 personnel from both fire agencies were on the ground.

The fire was contained about 6pm last night and crews worked late into the night blacking out the burning edge of the blaze. The scene was monitored overnight by plantation firefighters.

Two people reported injuries to their hands and were treated by paramedics.

Two relief centres were also set up soon after the fire was reported, but have since closed with the fire threat easing.

The Ballarat/Maryborough railway line was closed between Ballarat and Creswick, see the Vline website for more information.

This morning aircraft will undertake surveillance work and blacking out will continue on the ground, which will continue for a number of days. Smoke could still be visible in nearby communities.
