CFA firefighters will remain at the scene of a fatal crash at Tyabb while work is done to decant 20 tonnes of LPG from a B-Double truck.
Firefighters were called to a fire as a result of a fatal collision between a car and a B-Double on the Dandenong-Hastings Road around 8.15pm yesterday, 22 June.
CFA District 8 Operations Officer Don Wilkie said more than 100 firefighters worked to gain control of the fire just before midnight.
“The first responding crews did a fantastic job calling for the most appropriate equipment and had to make some quick decisions,” he said.
“The fact is this could have been much worse if there was an explosion. This great work by all agencies contributed to lowering the risk of this happening.”
Mr Wilkie said firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night. Firefighters would continue work today at the scene while the process of decanting was being completed.
“The B-Double still has 20 tonne of LPG in the tank. The gas company will begin decanting shortly and this process is essentially moving the gas from one tanker to another.
“This process is expected to take a number of hours, potentially well into the afternoon.”
Western Port Highway remains closed between Bungower Road in Somerville and Frankston-Flinders Road in Tyabb.
Emergency services will remain at the scene today and residents should avoid the area and seek an alternate route.
