Two large weekend fires in New South Wales near the Murray led to the deployment of two CFA strike teams.

The Ournie and Kaiora fires were both in hilly, rocky country and a Victorian Bird Dog aircraft was sent over for reconnaissance while a NSW helitak assisted the firefight.

“The strike teams worked all day yesterday [Sunday 6 January],” says District 24 Operations Officer Mark Owens. “There was one from the Corryong Group and the other was a mixed District 24 crew. On top of that was a team of three ground observers sent over from Wodonga Fire Brigade and a lot of slip-on support from DSE.”

A lot of good work has been done out of the Corryong ICC with three smaller fires started by lightning in Corryong on Friday night reaching Tintaldra. The ICC has been staffed by both CFA and DSE.
