Des rewarded for outstanding service

Late last year (24 November) CFA’s Des Phelan unassumingly attended what he thought was a Christmas party; little did he know his colleagues had something much more exciting in mind.

The evening was organised to award Des with an Outstanding Service Medal and celebrate his 36+ years of service as Grenville Group Officer.

Outstanding Service Medals recognise prolonged service to CFA, distinguished by exceptional performance.

CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington, who unfortunately could not attend the event said Des is a true reflection of what CFA is all about.

“I want to thank Des for devoting a large part of his life to the protection of lives and property in his local community,” said Steve.

All current Group Officers and District Planning Committee members were invited to attend, along with some of the past Group Officers that served with Des throughout the years.

A very humbled (and surprised) Des was overwhelmed as CFA members stood up and spoke about his person, and his amazing commitment to CFA.

The night started with Operations Manager Brett Boatman welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming. Brett then introduced Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley who then spoke about Des, who he has known for a long time.

Following this Mr Lapsley and Mr Boatman announced and presented an Outstanding Service Medal to Des, who responded with few words of surprise and honour.

The night then kicked off with a couple more informal speeches given by Mr Boatman who had the crowd laughing at stories from 1980, and Des’ long-term friend Ian “Lighty” Lightfoot who ‘roasted’ Des, sharing golden oldie stories with the crowd.

Des then once again took to the podium to thank everyone for the event and the medal. While he was very thankful and humbled, Des took time to explain that you don’t do it for the medals or the recognition.

Once the formalities finished everyone laughed, mingled and shared old ‘war stories’ over nibbles and drinks.

A great night was had by all who attended.
