CFA warns residents to take care when throwing out chemicals, after hydrochloric acid caused a stir for emergency services in Croydon North this morning (6 October).
CFA, MFB, police and ambulance responded to an incident where hydrochloric acid used for swimming pools in containers had leaked through contents of a rubbish collection truck, which caused a chemical reaction on Lyons Rd.
Crews are working with MFB to neutralise the acid, with a scientific officer and other specialists tapping into their chemistry knowledge to make the material safe.
Two people who were in the garbage truck are in the care of paramedics as a precaution.
District 13 Operations Officer Tim Holland said the incident was originally reported as a fire due to the chemical reaction in the truck.
“We planned to bring the truck into an open space to remove the rubbish so we could save the vehicle from fire damage, but once crews arrived, it was quickly discovered we would need a different approach,” Mr Holland said.
"Basically, under the guidance of the scientific officer, crews in splash suits and breathing apparatus moved the containers to a HAZMAT drum, then nuetralised the acid using soda ash.
“The incident serves as a reminder to always check with your local council on how to safely get rid of any sort of chemical to avoid situations like this.”
Three CFA crews from Wonga Park and a Hallam HAZMAT crew attended.
The incident was declared safe at 10.19am.
