Report for District 2 meetings December 2012 by Operations Manager Mark Gilmore.

HAPPY and SAFE Christmas to all.

Preparedness

Hopefully you all get to spend time with family and friends this festive season. Please be extra careful when travelling . Take your time and have plenty of rests if going long distances.

The FDP was introduced on the 26th November in City of Greater Bendigo, Mt Alexander and Central Goldfields municipalities. Macedon Ranges Shire will be introduced on 10th of December.

Aircraft Automatic dispatch has commenced in District 2.

The Air Attack Supervisor (AAS) rostered at Bendigo airport will be paged for all Code 1 Grass and Scrub fires and undefined fires in the district. If it is between 10 and 19:00 hrs and the FDI is over 12 a medium Helitak and a light helicopter for the AAS will respond at first attack.

Brigades are asked to brush up on your working safely with aircraft training material. We are also after feedback and data during this trial so please record how effective this is and provide us with this information.

As part of this trial your pager message will show that FB305 (Firebird Three Zero Five) has been paged in the list of appliances at the end of your message. They will initially communicate on the dispatch channel for Vicfire. On arrival they will be seeking an alternative channel to talk to the Incident Controller about tasking and priorities ASAP.

The final 2 planned Preparedness activities for the district are this month

-9th   Dec  9:00  Hrs Bus Tour D2 crew Leaders (Letters sent to Brigades and paged to all)

-11th Dec 18:30 Hrs Theatre night D2 Kyneton Open to all (Letters sent to brigades and paged to all)

A special thanks to all those who gave up their time to participate in exercises at our ICC’s the time was well spent and as always gave us a few things to think about and work on.

Following a recent fire we have been discussing slasher safety with contractor managers and we think that in dry grass at 20 Km/hr (Raised dust and paper) people should be extra vigilant and at 30 Km/hr (small trees swaying) work should cease. Feedback on this approach is sought.

 Fires and incidents

2 great efforts on the 29th November:

Talbot 20 Ha and one outbuilding at Lillicur with automatically dispatched aircraft assisting great work by ground crews with a fire which had got into the bush.

Baringhup 220 Ha of grass and 160 sheep burnt in a fast running fire in windy conditions. This was also a great save a fire with a head of 1 km width building quickly. Air support was vital here also.

Police charged one 35 year old male in Bendigo with Arson on the 28th November. This is a timely reminder to ensure that a fire investigator is called if the cause is not determined. Police have again agreed to join us in a zero tolerance approach to breaches in fire legislation.

 Buildings

Harcourt new Station was opened last Sunday by MP Damien Drum.

The final stages of paperwork are still being approved for Lancefield and Newham.

Marong project has gone out to tender
