The Drouin/Bunyip Fire Brigade Running Team is getting set for another competition season.

Local competitions are starting early November and the fast running fire fighters are looking to recruit some younger members for the upcoming season.

The competition season runs from November to March with a Christmas break, giving footballers and netballers the opportunity to keep fit over the summer and socialise with other young people. There is a senior competition (16 years and older), and there are junior competitions with two age groups; under 14’s and under 17’s. All age groups are open to males and females. The team is also looking for new people to help as official judges on competition days.

Today, knowledge of the competitions is unknown by the general public, but still remains a unique sport that requires speed and skill. Competitions are held across the state and are very popular in Gippsland, using traditional fire fighting equipment such as hoses, hydrants, ladders and carts. Events are conducted on a bitumen running track and teams compete against each other to finish the event in the fastest time possible. A close run between two teams is very exciting to watch.

There is no cost to participate in the competitions and state championships. You only need a pair of runners and a set of white (cricket) pants. Transport is provided from Drouin for most competitions and the team trains every Wednesday night, 6.00pm at the Bunyip Recreation Reserve.
