Dundas Group of Fire Brigades consisting of 18 Brigades from District 5 in South West Victoria conducted its annual pre-season training exercise utilising the Air Base at the Hamilton Airport last Sunday.

Activities included draughting, burnover drill, hose testing, TEWT and scenario utilising PDD (pre-determined dispatch) and working with Aircraft.  Group Officer Steve Lewis said “It was very pleasing once again to see the exercise being tremendously well supported with a turnout of over 70 volunteers, it was a great opportunity for brigades to practice talking to the bombers”.

District 5 Operations Officer Lindsay Barry conducted the TEWT (tactical exercise without trucks) and indicated the day went very well.  “It was encouraging to see the Officers of the brigades step up and take on the leadership roles during the scenarios” he said.  “I am confident that going forward they are better prepared for any outcome this season”.

District 5 District Mechanical Officer Pat Hyland took the opportunity to oversee the draughting drills at Lake Hamilton.  “It’s a good opportunity to sort out any issues with the trucks” he said.

Hamilton Air Base Manager Leighton Wraith was delighted with the attendance of the Group and only had praise for the excellent way the day went.  District 5 Operations Officer Paul Marshall also assisted on the day playing the role of Air Attack Supervisor in one of the scenarios.  “Our bombers are just fire trucks with wings” he said, “Any opportunity for brigades to practice their communications skills is a good thing as well”.

They day concluded with a BBQ and debrief at the Group Headquarters located at Hensley Park.
