CFA were called to a house fire in Myrtleford yesterday morning (Monday 21 August) after a fire broke out just before 1.00am.
The single occupant of the house was alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and was able to safely self-evacuate the house.
CFA Rostered Duty Officer Graeme Neil said crews worked well to get the blaze under control and that this incident is an important reminder that only working smoke alarms save lives.
“When we sleep we can lose our sense of smell. A working smoke alarm is needed to wake people in your house if there is smoke or fire,” Graeme said.
“It is important that smoke alarms are tested monthly, dusted yearly and replaced every ten years.”
Six CFA trucks from Myrtleford, Buffalo River, Gapsted and Mudgegonga battled the blaze that appeared to be caused by a damaged heater.
