East Gippsland CFA women inspire each other

Female volunteers from across East Gippsland gathered on Saturday for a Women’s CFA forum.

Women came from a variety of places including Bairnsdale, Mallacoota, Sarsfield and Mossi-Tambo to socialise, network, enjoy some great food and be inspired by influential presenters such as CFA Captain Christine Bittner, from District 11’s Mossi-Tambo Brigade.

Christine grew up around CFA, and when a previous Captain went away for work, the brigade wanted Christine to take on the role.

“I was initially scared at the idea, but then realised I had the support of my brigade and I tried to take up as many leadership development opportunities as I could possibly handle. Basically anything I could do to develop my leadership skills,” she said.

“I really enjoy the comradery in CFA. That feeling of belonging and doing something meaningful

“I won’t lie and pretend this is easy, but it’s been a journey of learnings and challenges. I’ve had the chance to involve my son and hope that what I do inspires him as my Grandfather inspired me. Like my son, I grew up around CFA as I shadowed my Grandfather as a CFA member.”

CFA Regional Brigade Support Officer Lisa Peters,  who organised the event, said Christine had a great leadership style, was very approachable, open to learning, knowledgeable, and well respected by her female and male peers.

“We have previously run similar events in other areas of Gippsland,” she said.

“It’s a great opportunity to network with other CFA and non-CFA members beyond the four walls of their fire station.”

“We have seen the networks expand horizons of female volunteers and staff to leadership training opportunities, women’s leadership forums, training, and ongoing social support networking.”

Sarah van der Velden from Bairnsdale Brigade said it was an exciting time to be a woman in the CFA.

“There are always great leadership and development opportunities arising, and women are encouraged to join up and speak up,” she said.
