Eltham celebrates member honours
The Eltham Fire Brigade has celebrated significant member milestones at its Annual Dinner held on August 2nd this year with the highlight being the presentation of a 45 year service award, National Medal 3rd Bar and a CFA Life Membership to Brigade Life Member Brian Sandlant. Brian’s contribution over many years to CFA has been substantial and the awarding of a CFA Life Membership is a fitting honour to be bestowed.
CFA Board Member John Peberdy was on hand to present the honours, and said that a CFA Life Membership is not given out or provided lightly, and only a very select group ever receive it. Given Brian’s extensive service at a brigade, group and wider level, the award recognizes many years of dedicated service. It was made all the more significant for Brian in that it had been kept secret from him until the night, certainly no mean feat given Brian’s extensive ongoing work with CFA.
The brigade also had presented a National Emergency Medal to 5th Lieutenant Trevor Cavanagh in recognition of service given during the 2009 Bushfires.
National Service Medals and CFA Service Medals were presented to a number of members during the evening. These included National Medals to 2nd Lt Graeme Gibson, SO M Hirst, FF G Bishop, FF J Mott, FF G Heaven, FF A Birch and FF B Dalton (absent); National Medal 1st Bar to FF M Dunn; National Medal 2nd Bar to FF C Egan and Secretary E Thomas. Service medals were presented to 3rd Lieutenant R Hoyne (10 years); FF A Birch and SO M Hirst (20 years); FF C Egan (35 years) and a significant milestone achieved for SSO S Gough who received a 45 year service medal.
The Brigade also presented BMT awards to FF G Heaven (Encouragement Award), FF R Trevithick (Recruit of the Year) and FF B Dalton (Operations Award). For the third time, FF M Collier won the Firefighter of the Year Award.
The Brigade acknowledges not only the efforts and achievements of its members, but also of the families who support those protecting the community in the diverse roles they provide. The Brigade and BMT congratulate all those who have put in a fantastic year in 2013/2014 and look forward to your continued support and efforts in the coming year.
