The vital role of women in emergency services was honoured during a special International Women’s Day event in Richmond today.

Firefighters, police and paramedics joined forces to help inspire the next generation of young leaders at Melbourne Girls College.

Around 30 cadets from the school’s Australian Air Force Cadet program played host to the inspiring delegation including:

  •          FFMV Chief Fire Officer Stephanie Rotarangi -  the first female fire Chief in Australia
  •          CFA CEO Frances Diver
  •          MFB firefighter and Survivor star Kylie Evans.
  •          CFA Golden Beach Brigade Captain Paula Gosveld

The event began with motivational talks and a friendly “battle” of the emergency services and students followed by a networking morning tea.

The theme for International Women’s Day #BeBoldForChange is about building a more inclusive, gender-equal world.

MFB Acting Chief Officer Paul Stacchino said MFB was proud to be involved in the event.

“We have 257 women employed across our organisation in both operational and corporate positions,” Mr Stacchino said.

“They do a fantastic job and play a crucial role in the emergency services sector.

“It’s only fitting that we pay tribute to their achievements on International Women’s Day.”

CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said the event was a great opportunity to say thank you to female staff and volunteers for their efforts in protecting lives and property.

“I’ve witnessed the spirit and skills of our people and I thank each one of them for their valuable contribution to making communities safer,” Mr Warrington said.

“We want to increase the participation of women in all aspects of the fire services – this will make our organisations more effective and sustainable.”
