Evacuation exercise in Blackwood
Victoria Police together with Moorabool Shire, CFA and other emergency personnel will undertake a test evacuation exercise in Blackwood, Dales Creek, Simmons Reef, Golden Point, Barrys Reef and Greenhills on Sunday 9 December 2012 from 11am to 2pm.
BLACKWOOD & DISTRICT RESIDENTS: For the purposes of the exercise we ask you to please wait and evacuate once you have received either a door knock from emergency services personnel or heard a police or emergency service vehicle siren in your street. Please evacuate to Egans Reserve, Greendale to participate in the Emergency Services Expo. In a real emergency the CFA website will have an official evacuation warning and instructions if required.
Moorabool Local Area Commander Inspector Mick Myers said the exercise would enable emergency services personnel and the community to test their response to a bushfire threat.
“Participation for the local community is voluntary, however we encourage their involvement as it presents a unique opportunity to test their personal bushfire plan,” he said.
“By working together we can assess how the area responds to a bushfire threat and use the valuable lessons learned to improve the Blackwood and District Evacuation Plan.
“During the exercise emergency services personnel will test and assess the effectiveness of a range of options for notifying the community of a fire threat and evacuation, including:
• sounding of community alert siren at about 11am for 5 minutes;
• issuing of emergency alert by mobile and landline;
• updating CFA website and Victoria Bushfire Information Line; and
• conducting doorknock in select locations and utilising police vehicles to alert residents via loud speaker.
“No roads will be closed during the exercise and the community can expect the area to be 'business as usual' however there will be increased activity by emergency services.”
The community is also invited to attend a community BBQ and emergency services expo being held at Egans Reserve, Greendale from 11am to 2pm on the day of the exercise.
