Hume Region Air Observers Ian Lyons and Ray Grant took to the sky yesterday in Fire Spotter 239 (a GA8 Airvan) to conduct fire detection flights across North East Victoria.

Volunteer Firefighter Lyons who works for Thales Australia is an experienced air observer and he finds Fire Spotter 239 a fantastic aircraft for reconnaissance.

The detection flights were carefully planned by Aircraft Officer Justin Tilson with input from both CFA and DEPI personnel.

Each flight focussed on searching for fires caused by lightening.  Fires were seen on both flights. The second flight was critical in identifying and communicating the exact location of a lightening strike near Marraweeney to the Rostered Duty Officer in District 22. Fire Spotter 386 from Shepparton was on scene soon after the fire was detected which allowed Fire Spotter 239 to be released to continue fire detection activities to the east.

Ian and Ray were equipped with the latest computer mapping equipment from CFA, which enables fires to be plotted digitally, and then emailed directly to a Planning Unit located within an Incident Control Centre.
