What binds CFA members is the common goal to protect lives and property, but you’re a diverse bunch. Every member has a story and Faces of CFA introduces you to just some of those stories.

Bruce Ray, Wooragee Fire Brigade

What is your brigade role?

I’m 2nd lieutenant.

Why did you join CFA?

I've been involved in the emergency services since 1977: NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Police, NSW Volunteer Rescue Association, CFA, both career and volunteer. It's in my blood.

After leaving NSW Police, I took up a role as an operations officer. When I left that role, I joined my local brigade.

What do you do for a living outside of CFA?

I’m currently an Airport Systems and Compliance Officer at Albury Airport just over the border.

How long have you been a member of CFA?

More than 17 years.

What incident has had the greatest impact on you and why?

Two incidents: the 1980 Uloola Track fire and 1983 Grays Point fire. Both involved multiple firefighter fatalities.

The 1980 fire, I was on the same track in the same burnover. We survived but unfortunately the crew from our neighbouring brigade didn't.

The 1983 Grays Point fire involved my brigade. I lost good friends and my mentor Captain Keith Campbell.

That fire is now one of the case studies in Minimum Skills and I can add weight to those learnings in my role as a volunteer trainer / assessor to new recruits.

The emphasis in our brigade and in District 24 is always on safety. You’ve still got to get in there and fight hard but, at the end of the day, everyone goes home safely.

What are your hobbies?

Brewing beer, mountain bike riding and running.

What is your favourite thing about CFA?

The can-do attitude. We get in, get the job done and do it safely.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining CFA?

Do it!
