CFA and MFB crews responded to Armstrong World Industries in Braeside as a result of a fire indicator panel alarm.

District 8 RDO Greg Christison said crews responded when an alarm was activated at the Mills Road factory, which produces vinyl, about 6.25am this morning.

“When crews arrived on scene there was a noticeable amount of smoke in the area. After investigating, firefighters found the fire within the duct extraction systems and were able to contain it there,” he said.

About 35 firefighters attended the fire, including three crews from MFB. CFA crews from Dandenong with the Ladder Platform, Frankston, Edithvale, Springvale and Patterson River were at the scene.

An advice message was issued, warning residents in the Braeside area there were large amounts of toxic smoke in the area.

Thermal Imaging Cameras were used to ensure the fire was safe. The fire was under control at 8.15am. Fire investigators attended during the day to determine the cause.
