I recently had the opportunity to visit the Southern Metropolitan Region with Chief Officer Euan Ferguson and was inspired to write about it.

The aim was to give Euan a tour of Southern Metro and the various challenges our Community Safety staff are taking on, and I really enjoyed getting out and about to experience first-hand all the great work they're doing.

As part of the day we visited the Casey Safety Village, a fantastic initiative that is delivering road and fire safety educational programs to kindergarten and primary school children in the region. It's a great partnership for CFA and the City of Casey - you can read more about it here.

The Village includes a miniature version of Victorian roads and looks like a huge amount of fun. It also holds the CFA fire safety room, which can accommodate 30 students and includes interactive multimedia facilities and a home environment that includes kitchen, lounge room and laundry replicas - all high risk areas in the home.

I'm proud to say that the Casey Safety Village has reached 84% booking capacity in its first year as a result of Southern Metro's outstanding promotion and service delivery.

As part of the day Chief Officer Euan Ferguson presented Karen Van Den Akker and Jane Fontana with five year service certificates and Fiona O'Loghlin with a 10 year service medal, and I would like to congratulate and thank them all for the outstanding contribution they have made to CFA.

There were some extremely informative presentations from David Baker (Acting Regional Manager), John Painter (BASO Coordinator), Chris Wyborn (Acting Manager Community Safety) and Steven Corrigan (Team Leader, Community Development Coordinator).

The presentations displayed a willingness from the Southern Metro team to be innovative and proactive in their approach to bushfire preparedness. This has proven essential for them when dealing with the introduction of the Wildfire Management Overlay on the Mornington Peninsula, and in particular the challenges brought by our option three assessments.

I'd like to thank the Southern Metro team for having us and giving the Chief Officer a great overview of their work. I'd also like to thank Pat Hunter (BASO) in particular, for his outstanding contribution to the FireReady Roadshow.
