A Bridgewater farmer has been airlifted to a Melbourne hospital after suffering burns to his hands and upper body during fire on his property.

The man was working in a harvested corn field when the blaze started around 2pm, Tuesday 20 November.

Remnants of the harvest helped the fire to grow to 35 hectares before 9 crews from Maiden Gully, Marong, Murphys Creek, Newbridge and Tarnagulla brought it under control after an hour.

It's likely firefighters will remain on scene into the evening.
