Firefighters were called to a fire in a eucalyptus distillery at Arnold, near Bendigo.

The call was received about 11am on Monday (12 November) after a passer-by saw a plume of black smoke in the area.

District 20 Operations Manager John Cutting said there was significant damage to the small factory, where eucalyptus oil is made.

The fire also spread to a pile of eucalyptus mulch about 100 cubic metres in size.

OM Cutting said the fire took about an hour to control, due to its remote location and access to water.

Seven trucks from Marong, Bridgewater, Tarnagulla, Inglewood and Wedderburn attended.

A fire investigator attended and believes the cause was an electric fault, however investigations are continuing.
