An upper level restaurant and bar at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale has been significantly damaged by fire.

4 CFA crews from Dandenong, Rowville and Springvale, including two large ladder platform trucks (MFB & CFA units) responded to an alarm in the racecourse pavillion just after 11:30am Wednesday.

The 20 metre by 30 metre rooms roof cavity was well alight when they arrived. Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building to attack the fire and managed to contain it to the one area.

Staff and workers followed procedures and evacuated to a safe area.

The fire was brought under control around 12:15pm and fire investigators would be assessing the site today.
