I’m a CFA member who’s lived in Broadford all my life and I can't imagine living anywhere else. It’s the perfect place to raise my children.

I have four sisters, two of whom are in local brigades, and one sister who is in the Rural Fire Service in New South Wales. I also have three nieces in Juniors. Another sister has recently joined her local brigade and my mum has joined Broadford to help with radios over the fire season. So, technically, we have our own turnout crew!

Story by Gaybrielle Burgess

Joining the brigade was just another way to give back to the community. I am a Scout mum on the fundraising committee for the local Scouts and a stage manager for the local theatre company.

Being a member at Broadford CFA has led to so many opportunities. Broadford brigade has created a very informative Facebook page. I am the Fire Safe Kids coordinator, and the community education officer. I also belong to the Member Engagement Group which organises yearly CFA forums.

This video was made by Gaybrielle at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image during a digital storytelling workshop especially for CFA members.

I have learned two very valuable lessons. Through Fire Safe Kids, if you get through to kids, you get through to their parents. Through community education, local knowledge is priceless.

My biggest highlight to date has been being Captain Koala for the Good Friday Appeal at the Royal Children's Hospital. The day left me so appreciative of what I have and what I can give ... time.

Working with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image team on my video was a fabulous experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Federation Square and met a lot of CFA members who share the same passion as I do... Helping others!

I love what I do!
