Whilst a great deal of our Fire Brigade attention recently has been on the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, other and equally important activities have been undertaken by our Brigades here in Bass Coast.
Story by Scott Hamilton
Recently the children at the JLM Kindergarten at Corinella and the San Remo Kindergarten had the joy having a visit from the Fire Brigade. The volunteers from Cornella visited the Kinder and the San Remo members opened their station to make these” little firefighters” very welcome as they taught them important fire safety lessons and then showed the children over the fire trucks and allowed them to squirt the fire hose.
These visits are a partnership between the kindergartens and the Fire Brigade as the visits form part of the kinder curriculum with the teachers doing follow up teaching around what firefighters do and fire safety.
“The children were fantastic and the Brigade looks forward to their visit again soon!” commented San Remo Brigade Community Safety Officer Ray Symons. “To see their expressions when they squirt the fire hose is something special!”
CFA Brigades are always available to visit Kindergartens, Schools and Play Groups. Our “Fire Safe Kids” education program is specially targeted at Kindergarten and Primary School aged children and has been developed in conjunction with the Education department and early childhood development specialists.
“One of the key messages we talk to children about is having a home fire escape plan and practicing it. It is so important that the children know and understand what to do in an emergency” said Captain Sue Jenner from the Corinella Fire Brigade. “We encourage all families to sit down together and formulate a plan”. Information is available through the CFA Website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call into your local CFA fire station on a Sunday Morning.
The Corinella and San Remo Brigades would like to thank the Community Safety department at District 8 for their support in making these visits a great success.
