Fireys drumming up support
The Golden Square Fire Brigade is fundraising for a new shed.
A new vehicle is set to arrive in a few weeks but it won't fit in the brigade's existing shed, so the brigade has registered for Saturday's Garage Sale Trail Day in the hope of raising money towards building a home for the new vehicle.
"Our brigade members have donated any items they don't want any more but they think are of some value," First Lieutenant Tim McNeilly said. "The brigade will then sell them at the garage sale.
"We've never done the Garage Sale Trail Day before but one of our brigade members suggested it was a good idea for a fundraiser. We're a volunteer station and any funds that we get we have to get from fundraisers and donations."
First Lieutenant McNeilly and Second Lieutenant Alistair Baird were at the station on Thursday preparing for the sale.
"We've got some books, household goods, kids toys - including a toy drum kit, and we're going to have a couple of fridges for sale," First Lieutenant McNeilly said. "We're going to be set up in the side driveway at the station on Saturday from 8am to about 2pm. It would be nice to get a couple of hundred dollars."
Volunteers will be cooking-up a barbecue on the day.
"The trucks will be here as well so we're more than happy for kids to climb over them and have photos. Volunteers will be manning the stall, they'll have to duck out if we get any call-outs.
"It should be a good day."
First Lieutenant McNeilly said people could donate unwanted items to the brigade for the sale.
"We are also willing to accept unwanted items from anyone in the community who would like to donate them to the brigade for us to sell, providing that it is worthwhile us trying to sell," he said.
