Morwell and Traralgon firefighters “busted their guts” on treadmills for three hours to raise money for local footballer Beau Vernon, who became a quadriplegic after a tragic accident on the field.

“We’ve all played football before and it was something close to our heart,” said Acting Operations Officer Paul Fixter.

“There’s some healthy competition between the Morwell and Traralgon career firefighters and we thought it would be good to harness that rivalry to give something back to the community.”

The Morwell team just came out on top by running 43.6 kilometres, 1.2 kilometres more than Traralgon.

“The runners were fantastic on both sides – it was amazing to see the effort they went to. They absolutely busted their gut for this cause, it was brilliant. They worked hard and there was a lot of sweat in the Mid Valley Shopping Centre that day.”

The Morwell team of five included AFL legend Terry Wallace, while the Traralgon career and volunteer firefighters had help from 3GGAM radio presenter Meagz – who did live radio crosses throughout the challenge.

“We were able to raise over $1,500 in three hours thanks to on the spot donations as well as contributions from the Mid Valley Shopping Centre and 3GGAM radio."

“It was such a success that we’re looking at running another event in March and will invite other emergency services to participate as well.
“I’d like to thanks both Officers In Charge (OIC) for being so supportive, Morwell OIC Shane Mynard for his great running effort and Traralgon OIC Peter Lockwood for his help with the coordination.”
