The Fire Danger Period will commence for the following municipalities from 1am on Monday 16 October 2017:

  • Wellington Shire
  • East Gippsland Shire

CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said while CFA does everything it can, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.

“There was still a short window of opportunity to clean up your property if you haven’t already done so,” said Garry.

“Out of control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have been a major headache for brigades.

“You should avoid burning off when high winds are forecast – not only on the day of your burn but for the days afterwards. It is also important to make sure any burnoffs are extinguished before leaving and have adequate breaks around them to prevent them spreading to adjoining areas or properties”

“For information about burn-off restrictions specific to your area consult your local council.

“This fire season CFA will be taking a zero tolerance approach to any fires resulting from negligent behaviour.

“Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by police.

“Even if you have a permit to use fire over the Fire Danger Period, make sure you read the conditions carefully. Failing to follow just one of those conditions may leave you open to prosecution.”
