Following the release of the Professor Joy Report last week, environmental engineering firm Cardno Lane Piper has begun work to oversee the implementation of the 10 recommendations outlined within the report.

Cardno Lane Piper has been engaged by CFA to oversee improvements at Fiskville, including the fire training water management system.

They will also oversee investigations into soil, surface water and groundwater quality, and an examination of old landfill sites at Fiskville identified in the Professor Joy Report.

Cardno Lane Piper is one of Australia's leading environmental engineering firms and will provide CFA with the expertise we need to give all our people confidence in Fiskville.

We remain deeply committed to the Fiskville Training College as the primary training ground for a significant number of Victoria's emergency service volunteers and career staff, not to mention personnel from many other organisations.

Any calls to close the Fiskville site are unwarranted. Fiskville and the other CFA training grounds have also been inspected by hygienists and environmental consultants Hazcon, who found there were no significant risks to the health and safety of those who work there (including trainees and visitors).

An initial inspection of one former tip site has identified two small pieces of bonded cement sheeting which may contain asbestos but we have been advised the material poses no risk to staff or trainees at Fiskville.

The area, including a running track, is well away from dwellings and is not used for any training activities. It has been quarantined until a licensed contractor removes the material in coming days.  A hygienist will also oversee the removal.

I will continue to keep you updated with information as we implement the recommendations from the Professor Joy Report.
