I am pleased to announce the appointment of former Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe APM as the Independent Monitor - Fiskville. This appointment fulfils a key promise made by the Board in its response to the Professor Joy Report.

As the Independent Monitor, Mr Walshe will report directly to the Chair of the Board for a period of two years. He will oversee and report upon CFA's progress in implementing the ten recommendations and eleven management initiatives to which CFA has committed in relation to Fiskville, and his reports will be made available to the public.

Mr Walshe comes with an exemplary record from his 44 years of service with Victoria Police, where he held the role of Deputy Police Commissioner for six years. As a Deputy Commissioner, Mr Walshe was part of the Executive Command of Victoria Police and was equally accountable as is the Chief Commissioner for the performance of the organisation in accordance with the Police Regulation Act.

In addition to his experience as Deputy Commissioner, for the past six years Mr Walshe has been a Trustee of the Victoria Police Provident Fund and for the past eight years a member of the Board of Management of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. He also served as a member of the Board of Management of the Emergency Services Foundation for three years prior to his retirement from Victoria Police.

Mr Walshe is a highly respected Victorian and we are fortunate that he has agreed to act in this position. His oversight will provide assurance to our members and the public that CFA is effectively implementing the recommendations and initiatives to which it committed in its response to the Professor Joy Report.
