Flying the CFA flag in Turkey
What do Epping and Echuca Fire Brigades and Koca Sinan Fire Department in Istanbul have in common? More than you think.
Later this month a group of Epping and Echuca CFA volunteers will visit the Koca Sinan station to share their experiences of being involved with a volunteer-based organisation as firefighters.
“We’re really excited to spread the word about CFA across the other side of the globe, particularly at a station in Istanbul where I don’t believe any CFA member has visited,” Epping brigade secretary Michael Cawthan said.
“I have over the last few months been in regular contact with the fire station on what CFA is and what we’re all about and they are really impressed by what we do and how we do it.
“They are well aware of our climate and the risks we have with large grass and bushfires every summer here in Australia, and they are keen to speak with us about road rescue as they are also a road rescue brigade.
“They’re a big station with about 18 appliances and they also work to some degree like our integrated stations here with staff and volunteers so it will be good to hear about.”
As part of their trip to Turkey, the Epping members and a volunteer from Echuca Fire Brigade will also attend the Anzac Day ceremony at Gallipoli Cove.
“It’s something that’s always been on my bucket list so I spread the word around the brigade and found others who were also interested,” Michael said.
“I think it will be a very moving event as we reflect back on what happened and what the ANZAC soldiers gave so we can be so proud of being who we are, and never ever forget.”
Through Matt McLachlan Battlefield Tours, the group will also take the time to visit Troy and undertake other activities including a tour of the Bosphorus Sea, Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Lone Pine Cemetery and much more. Michael said a few of the members were also travelling onto Cairo.
“We’re all very excited now the trip is fast approaching and I’m sure we’ll come back with plenty of stories, photos and learning’s to share with our fellow CFA members,” Michael said.
