From the CO - Fire services reform update
The state government’s legislation to support the implementation of reform of Victoria's fire services was passed by the Legislative Assembly on 8 June 2017.
On 21 June, the Victorian Legislative Council resolved to establish a Select Committee to inquire into the Firefighters' Presumptive Rights Compensation and Fire Services Legislation Amendment (Reform) Bill 2017 and, in particular:
- the impact on fire service delivery across Victoria,
- effect on volunteer engagement and participation in fire service delivery,
- short term and long term cost impact on fire service provision, and
- underlying policy rationale.
This process will provide an important opportunity for consultation with CFA staff, volunteers and the broader community about reform of Victoria’s fire services.
CFA senior leaders have already met with members of all integrated stations, more than 30 volunteer brigades and held meetings with many of our PTA staff since the government announced its fire services statement. We will continue to support and engage meaningfully with all staff and volunteers.
The broad principles of the state government’s proposed changes seek to restore CFA to a volunteer only organisation and create a new fire service for urban and regional towns, staffed by paid firefighters from both MFB and CFA. More details about that can be found on the Victorian Government’s dedicated website here – www.fireservices.vic.gov.au
CFA will continue its work on elements of the fire services statement including working with the Policy and Performance Committee on priorities for the CFA support fund, addressing gender diversity targets and consultation with the 35 integrated brigades on their plans for the future.
The Select Committee has invited submissions from individuals and organisations addressing one or more of the issues identified in the Committee’s terms of reference.
The closing date for submissions is Friday 7 July 2017 and more information can be found here.
